Training Roses
[From Fifty Favourite Roses, by Michael Gibson, p. 16:] Pillar roses. Any pillar rose will flower better if the shoots are trained in a spiral round the support, which will encourage the production of flowering side shoots.
[From The Rose Garden, by William Paul, p. 76: Tips for training climbing roses on arches] If the arches are too deep the light is excluded from the interior and the flowers all draw to the top, in which position they are not seen. If it is wished to have an arched Rose-walk, the arches should not exceed two feet in depth, and they should be placed about a yard apart.
