A friend gave me blooms of Veteran's Honor to compare the scent with Oklahoma. Both last long in the vase, but I prefer Veteran's Honor scent over Oklahoma. Veteran's Honor has a cherry/raspberry scent, very refreshing, but Oklahoma has a strong lychee scent, like Double Delight on steroids, too fruity for my personal liking. I would rate Veteran's Honor scent as strong and long-lasting as Oklahoma in alkaline clay, where the fruity-scents are intense.

some rate the fragrance of VH as none to mild.... That seems to contradict with your comments, could you tell me is the scent of VH strong enough? thank you.

I grow VH as own-root in a slightly acidic potting soil (with pH 5 rain-water) - slight scent on the bush, but the scent becomes stronger (cherry) in a vase with alkaline tap-water (pH 9). I put into my alkaline clay recently, will report the scent when it blooms next year.

After sniffing my VH as own-root, I don't think VH scent is strong enough on the bush. My friend with a strong scent on VH: her Munstead Wood's scent is many times stronger than my Munstead Wood (own-root). My friend's VH is grafted on Dr. Huey in alkaline clay, plus she fertilizes with chicken-manure and fish-emulsion .. those factors can make the scent stronger.
Also 1st year roses don't have much scent, but the scent becomes stronger in 2nd and 3rd year. I was very disappointed with the light scents on Christopher Marlowe & W.S. 2000 & Tchaikovsky as own-roots in their 1st year. But in the 2nd and 3rd year .. all those scents went from light to strong.

Three strikes and I am out.
I didn't find any of the three roses on the website that you referenced.

Perhaps you can let me/us know how you found them.
Thank you.

You have to "take care of" this one a bit more than some roses... but the rewards in super excellent color/form are worth it! It even has a mild scent.

I have had Veterans Honor growing in my garden for 3years now, this rose is one of the first i planted in my garden of 88. I purchased this as a J&P rose from Lowels. We have had our problems, i must say, i luv the color and form and scent of the veteran but, iam concern with its growing habit, my rose only grows on new wood, for the first 2years i just let it grow, it only gave up a few blooms, then just stopped blooming. Last season, it was prunned and it gave up many blooms, later in the season again, it stopped blooming until i prunned it again. So for this reason this growing season 2011, i have ordered a replacement rose (Black Magic) an i will be shoveling the Veteran this march,(with a heavy heart). I wanted to get a new one and try it again but iam just to afraid the same thing will happen. With limited space in my garden i must choose wisely. Has anyone else had this problem with the Veterans Honor?

I have 4 Veteran's Honors. They are almost always in bloom. They will blackspot if I don't keep them sprayed. Mine came from Jim Mills at K & M Nursery in Buckatunna, Mississippi and are on Fortuniana root stock.
