Vintage Gardens is very much alive as a mail order nursery and indeed mails roses to France sometimes on request of some buyers. The part that closed was just their walk-in retail store.

I ordered for the first time from this nursery this year, I had come across the website while looking for sources for Heritage Roses, especially mosses--I want to collect as many as I can. I was very impressed with their selection of old roses, and their selection of mosses is larger than any other source I have found. True, only a small selection are available at any one time, I assume due to the time, cost and demand involved. I hope, though they will cycle through their available plants over the seasons/years to give those of us who cannot afford to purchase custom roots a chance to collect all the ones we want. I was a little alarmed because due to the economy, this wonderful nursery is unsure how long they will be able to continue--yet another reason I chose to order from them this season. It would be a true travesty to lose this valuable resource for old and rare roses. I for one, hope they will be able to continue for many, many years to come (and there are so many more roses I want to buy from them!). I received 3 mosses from them, 1 of 'Salet' and 2 of 'Mme. Louis Leveque'. Both roses arrived safely, 'Salet' had already begun to develop leaves, and is now flourishing. Unfortunately, neither 'Leveque' broke dormancy. When I contacted Vintage Gardens, they offered me replacements or a refund. I was very, very impressed with their integrity and their customer service! I would say I am now another loyal customer who will do all I can to help keep them going for many more years.
