Have dealt with Hortico off/on since the late 80's and have had generally very good experiences. A few years ago there were some mislabels, and also a non-start. But in all honesty, I have experienced such with all growers and this does not anger me. Hortico buds, I believe, on Canina and the plants have long, fiberous roots and much smaller tops and bud unions than plants sold in the US--first time seen, this does appear startling. However, and despite the non-start experience, the Hortico plants once growing really bust out, get big fast, generally provide far more basals than US plants. I have also fall planted with Hortico (I live in Ohio) and the results really great. None lost, all started, all grew well for years. For anyone living in the north (6 or lower?) I would STRONGLY encourage you to give fall planting a try. It really does jump start the "first year" plants.........

Despite my promise to myself that I'd never order from Hortico again, I bought about 15 roses last fall for fall planting. 100% survived the winter, and all seem to be the correct rose, so I purchased another 30 or so roses for spring planting this year. Again, all the roses are doing well and seem to be the rose I ordered. Customer service was responsive and helpful. Perhaps changes have been made in their methods?

Update: While I continue to be amazed at how well Hortico roses adapt to my desert soil, this year 3 out of 8 roses I received were mislabeled. Parole, Mamy Blue and Mrs. Lincoln are all some other variety. Quality control needs to be stepped up.

I ordered four roses from them two years ago. I live in the desert of Southern California and was unsure how they would do here. Of the four, one died but I believe that was my fault. The remaining three, Shi-Un, Royal William and Old Fragrance are three of the biggest roses I have. My Shi-un has no fragrance (at least to me) and is supposed to be fragrant. It looks so much like the pictures I see, I doubt it is mislabeled.

I'm ordering a few more this year and did confirm, by email, their availability. Hopefully, I will have good luck.

This nurser'y appears to be very poorly mismanaged. I ordered four 'Parole' or 'Buxom Beauty' roses in the spring of 2011, and instead I receieved four inferior roses of another cultivar.

Hortico promised it would send me the correct rose in the fall of 2011, but then said it was unavailable for fall shipment. Hortico then said the roses would be availabe in the fall of 2012.

This was clearly unreasonable, so I requested a refund of my money a month ago. Hortico has not responded and failed to return the funds I paid them.

Ouch, I'm sorry you've had such an experience with them. Unfortunately, what you've described isn't that unusual from personal experience and from those shared by quite a few others whom I know personally and whose experiences I've read on the Internet rose forums. I guess the best thing to do is not reward them with your money any further and make sure you share your experiences with any and all who are interested, here and on Garden Web, as well as any other rose and gardening forums you frequent. It's too bad in these days of dwindling rose sources, such a large, visible source as this has to resort to such substandard treatment of their customers. The best course is to take your business, and any other business you can influence, to sources who value your business and treat you properly.
