[From The Makers of Heavenly Roses, by Jack Harkness, p. 128:] In business [Francis Meilland] sought an international network of agents who would simultaneously introduce his varieties all over the world. He called it Universal Rose Selection. The prospective varieties for the future were sent to each member; after everyone had the opportunity to assess the roses at home, a June meeting was held annually at Antibes, to determine which should be introduced. The weakness of the plan was that the participants occasionally found themselves obliged to introduce a rose which was not successful in their particular climate. The strength of it lay in the catalogues. They were beautifully printed in France, and so desgined that each participant would provide his own text. The pictures of the roses were exquisite, such as could not be afforded by an individual nursery...
