Champlain. Dark red. 30 [petals]. 36". Repeat.
An Explorer rose. A kordesii hybrid. Spreading. Clzusters of slightly fragrant, velvety 3-inch (7.5-cm) blooms with yellow stamens. Good repeat bloom. Immature bronze reddish foliage turns pale green on prickly cane. Prone to lack spot and powdery mildew, although it fights off mildew well. Orange hips in fall. Basically hardy, but susceptible to dieback. Winter protection does help (zone 4, but often listed as zone 3 to 5).

From open pollination of 'Red Dawn x Suzanne' I selected D07 and D08. ...D08 had double, soft pink flowers, was very hardy and flowered repeatedly. It was highly resistant to powdery mildew but was somewhat susceptible to blackspot. It was pollen parent of 'Champlain' which in turn produced 'George Vancouver' and 'Louis Jolliet'.

‘Champlain’ = Arbuste… croissance modérée, mais d’excellente santé et d’une extrême résistance aux grands froids. Il se pare tout l’été d’une profusion de grandes fleurs rouge foncé d’une trentaine de pétales… petites feuilles vert doré… Svelda, Canada, 1982.

Champlain A small shrub with glossy foliage tinted red. It is disease-resistant, even relatively aphid resistant. The flowers are semi-double, deep velvety red. It is the least hardy Explorer, often killing to the ground in severe winters, betraying its floribunda heritage.
