Introduced in United Kingdom by Sunningdale Nurseries Ltd. in 1967 as 'Chianti'.
Class:
Shrub.   (Series: English Rose Collection)

Mauve or purple blend.  Strong, old rose fragrance.  50 to 70 petals.  Average diameter 3".  Double (17-25 petals), cupped bloom form.  Once-blooming spring or summer.

USDA zone 5b through 10b.  Shade tolerant.  Disease susceptibility: susceptible to Mildew.  Spring Pruning: Remove old canes and dead or diseased wood and cut back canes that cross. In warmer climates, cut back the remaining canes by about one-third. In colder areas, you'll probably find you'll have to prune a little more than that.  Prune lightly until this rose gets established (about two years), then prune it back by about a third..
Patents:
Patent status unknown (to HelpMeFind).
Notes:
Finegand Nursery says this rose has Gallica-like rosettes of deep crimson which turn with age to a beautiful purplish-maroon...

One of the early products of David Austin's breeding program. Modern Roses 10 says that it is repeat-blooming, but Austin says that it is once-blooming.

The Plant Science Dept. of the Nova Scotia Agriculture College evaluated 58 English Roses to assess their hardiness and disease-resistance. Their results can be found at: http://www.nsac.ns.ca/nsac/ps/annual96/mapple.htm. Chianti was found to be winter hardy.
