Quite often passes on Fragrance to its offspring
Astor Perry told me to use this rose to increase fertility in offspring

While I used roses like Mr Lincoln, Chrysler Imperial, and Crimson Glory to try to add fragrance to my seedlings, I found that Alec's Red is most often in the fragrant seedlings that I have kept. Far too often with the others the seedlings either lacked form or disease resistance and were discarded.

Thanks John, yes, I love descendants of Fragrant Cloud but many have disease issues. I might play with Alec's Red. At least I won't remove my specimen for now in hopes I get to it one day. Fragrance is very easily lost as you know.

I used Fragrant Cloud for years as well but in the end I don't have even one seedling that I kept from it. Alec's Red isn't perfect but when I look at what I have kept, I find most are related to it. Good luck!

Too much 'Peace' in it for my blood. Same bs pattern here, and the blooms melt.
But I think it is a good "all arounder" type. But not for breeding.

Yes Alec's Red is a cherry red. At first the blooms where flatter and I prefer the high center exhibition form. But the color is really outstanding. Not a blue red but a bright red.
Well now on Alec's second year the blooms are very beautiful and have the classic hybrid form.
A very beautiful rose.
I'm just north of Portland Oregon.

I might describe this rose as "cherry red" and it is a keeper in my garden. My bush is grafted onto Fortuniana and it gets big and bushy, but not overwhelmingly so. The blooms are very fragrant, have good petal substance, nice hybrid tea form initially then evolving into more of an old fashion type bloom. My plant repeats very well with many flushes during the season and it produces many blooms during each flush. This is a great garden rose in my area and I would highly recommend it.
