I am concerned that my Color Magic may have been mislabled. It looks like a pale version of Queen Elizabeth with no strawberry/scarlet blush. Bloom color does not change much with age, sun or temperature. Should I give it more time? I've only owned it eight months.

I have no experience with this particular rose, but I do know that roses when immature or stressed can throw out blooms that are unlike their 'normal' blooms. Of course, it's also possible that it's simply mislabeled. You might look at your rose's leaves/thorns/habit and compare them to pics of this rose which are listed here and on other rose sites.

The strange weather this year has many of my roses blooming out of character. My Love and Peace looks like Double Delight... no yellow or orange, which it normally has. I'd give it some time and see if it blooms true when the weather cools.

they are both towering plants but the blooms on Color Magic are MUCH larger.
Have you been able to determine the correct mname yet?

Deb just had to have Color Magic when she saw it at the nursery in spring of 2005. I warned her it was notoriously tender and folks in zone 6 could not get CM to survive winter. I was told (in no uncertain terms) not to worry about it, that CM would survive winter in our zone 4/5 yard. The rascal not only survived but has been one of our most vigorous roses during the 2006 season. CM is not cane hardy here. I gave it extra protection and only had 6 inches of live cane (5 or 6 canes) in spring. Three months later CM was over 5 feet tall and 4 feet wide. CM is over 6 feet tall right now. That is tall in our yard for a hybrid tea. I give up.

Update: 4/14/09 Color Magic came through its 4th Montana winter in good condition. Canes are dead to the snowline. The thing is covered with new growth and new canes are coming out of the ground.

What kind of disease resistance does Color Magic have in the Pacifiic NW?

Color Magic is not a particularly disease-resistant rose, but the unique way the colors deepen and change make it a good rose to try! I would think the Pacific Northwest would be a good climate for this rose; it's a bit tender for colder climates. Go to some exhibit gardens and see if it's planted there. If you do grow it, don't be surprised if occasionally a whole shoot dies back. It does that sometimes, and you just have to take the dying shoot off at the base. Did I say try it? TRY IT! I'm embarrassed to say mine has been growing in a large bucket from a bare root for little over a year now in the PNW.  (House construction...)  In spite of a fairly cold winter (certainly quite a bit of snow at times) it looks like it's alive and well and reasonably healthy in spite of its very un-ideal situation.  It was in shade throughout the winter until late February which might have helped moderate temperature swings but it also kept it frosted longer.Be careful, though - it bites.  Handle with care!

Generally most roses will be effected by soil, sun and climatic conditions. But when a rose has many different colours in it, the effect is very interesting. The reds in Color Magic are richest in the full sun but the flowers are smaller. In cooler climates the flowers are larger but not as bright. This is a rose that prefers a warm climate and does better in it.

Thanks you answered what I needed to know! I Live in Texas so my climate is very warm. I live in zone 8. I purchased this particular rose because of the cool colors it had, but I didn't know which climate it did better in, and I was told that this rose was a partial shade rose, so that made me wonder if the sun made it not as bright as it would be in shade or as it turned out to be backwards. But thanks again you told me what I needed, and thanks for taking the time to reply! :)
