One of the loveliest of single roses, ‘Complicata’ is hardly a typical Gallica, being a great, rambling bush, quite capable of clambering 3 metres (10 feet) into other shrubs and cascading over them with its shining pink flowers against clear green leaves. It is rather deficient in scent, and rather too straggly to grow on its own. The best way to grow it is to plant it in a mixed shrubbery where it can grow as it pleases, with only mild discipline at pruning time. ‘Pruning time’ in this case means after flowering, as the hips are nothing special. The name does not mean ‘complex’ but ‘folded together’ - there is a distinct pleat in each petal. Parentage unknown. Summer flowering.
Book  (1993)  Page(s) 35.

'Complicata'. A Gallica. A strong-growing shrub with flowers about 12 cm (4 in) across. Possibly a cross between Rosa gallica and Rosa canina. Summer flowering. Height to 300 cm (10 ft) if supported.
Book  (1992)  Page(s) 157.

'Complicata'. It is the white centre and yellow stamens which give the rose 'Complicata' it's brilliance, enhancing the already clear pink. It is sometimes called R. gallica 'Complicata', but, while the gallica rose is almost certainly in its parentage, it is a rose of unknown origin......
