This one seems to be very inconsistent. My experience differs from others in other areas, I think. I grew it when it was new. It behaved nearly identically to Queen Elizabeth. 6-7' tall. Large, vase-shaped clusters at face level. It was healthy, and easy to grow, but it did BS quite easily here.

All that Jazz Survived the frosts unharmed and is sprouting allready! And that is special, considering it still flowered in december and a lot of large flowered roses frozen above ground-level!

It has already been freezing at night, and it's almost December, but this rose is still flowering!
Not like mad, but still has some flowers (that last long) and buds.
It also has a lot of foliage!

Kim, I wouldn't call it disease resistent, or vigorous, but it is a relatively young plant and not particularly unhealthy. I'll see it's behaviour when really settled.
I like the almost single flowers and the colourchange of them during the seasons.

All That Jazz has been a healthy bloom machine for us. It has 100+ blooms per flush and repeat is good, about 5 weeks. Foliage is thick and healthy. Only problem is when we have a frost and ATJ is in bloom. Petals turn downright nasty looking (wet, used tissue) and I want to deadhead it with a chainsaw. Sometimes I think I can detect a fragrance if I sniff the blooms hard enough. The beautiful foliage and the look of the bush always saves ATJ from getting thrown out. That and Deb would shoot me, she likes ATJ. Don't know why I dislike the critter so much. ATJ gets a bit over 3 feet tall and would get wider than 5 feet if I let it. I don't protect it and ATJ usually has a foot of cane in spring. Spring growth is vigorous. It is a well behaved, attractive bush. Dave South central Montana - zone 4/5 |

Hi Dave. I can understand what you mean about All That Jazz. It's such an incredibly good shrub rose, but the color can be difficult to work into a garden, unless you use many of it by itself. For landscaping, it's great! Particularly where you need strong bursts of color. But, trying to put that in a garden with other colors can be a bit trying. What a glorious plant, though! Kim

Hi Kim ATJ would look good in a mass planting (in someone else's yard). It looks good beside Iceberg but Gene Boerner and Elmhurst are right there too. A visitor mentioned she wished the Knock Outs she planted looked half as good as our ATJ. Deb wouldn't let me give her ATJ. Oh well, it looks great between flushes. To be fair... ATJ looks great when it is blooming, to everyone else around here. Dave |

Dave, those would be good combinations. I grew ATJ for years, before my garden was destroyed for condominium construction and enjoyed it every year. The best use of it I've encountered is at a client's house on Carbon Canyon in Malibu, California. It's about a mile from the ocean, inside stone walls. They have a bed of it and it looks stupendous! You can see those flowers in the fog! LOL! Thanks. Kim

I hope the stone walls are between All That Jazz and the ocean. LOL, wouldn't want any ships going aground. Trying to visualize ATJ in a setting like that and it sounds fantastic. I imagine ATJ gets much bigger in southern CA than it does here. I have a foliage contest every year among our roses. ATJ is always a finalist. Kordes' Perfecta always wins here. The tie breaker usually comes down to how the blooms look against the foliage. That always dooms ATJ to second since I am the sole judge. It does speak highly of ATJ because we do have quite a few roses with excellent foliage (if I do say so myself). Dave |
