'Chivalry'. Hybrid Tea. syns 'MACpow', 'Rittertum'. Bred by McGredy (NZ) and introduced in 1977, this rose is a very tall and spreading grower. The flowers come on long stems for cutting and they are a delicious concoction of cherry red with hints of orange on a creamy yellow petal base. There is no fragrance. They last well in the vase. Foliage is dark green and glossy and the bush is very vigorous and healthy. ('Peer Gynt' x 'Brasilia'). Zones 6-9.

‘Chivalry’/MACpow/’Rittertum’ = Hybride de Thé… grande fleur à 35 pétales délicatement incurvés… rouge carmin nuancé, lavé de champagne au revers… parfum très discret… bon rosier pour massifs et bordures, au feuillage sombre et luisant, à la végétation saine et vigoureuse, quoique peu exubérante… McGredy, Nouvelle-Zélande, 1977.

Final Analysis 1984-85
'Chivalry'. McGredy 1977 ('Peer Gynt' x 'Brasilia'). 35 petals. Red and yellow blend. 43 reports. 7.3 rating. First year reports all from the lower half of the North Island speak of good coloured long lasting flowers borne on rather coarse thorny stems. Later reports from a larger area of New Zealand talk of a healthy strong growing thorny bush producing gaudy weather resistant long lasting blooms on a tall upright growing bush. In most of our climates and soils 'Chivalry' grows to about one and a half-two metres tall, a 'back of bed' garden rose. Only from Hastings is any disease mentioned over the five years, a little mildew. A recommended good garden rose to give a bright spot anywhere in New Zealand.

Chivalry  (S. McGredy). Nicely formed bi-coloured blooms with about 35 petals. The petals are red on their inner faces and yellow on the reverse. Vigorous. A good garden rose. The best new rose that I saw in Britain and Europe in 1976. It was not on sale here until a few years later.

'Chivalry'. McGredy 1977 ('Peer Gynt' x 'Brasilia') - Red with a yellow reverse. 11 reports on 15 bushes, grown over 2 to 5 years, a height of 1 to 2 metres, and a rating of 7.4. Though Hutt, Takaka and Rotorua imd this variety to grow tall, most find it to be of average height. All state it to be very thorny. The colour holds well giving a grand garden display from bud to petal fall. The petals are firm, the foliage glossy, the repeat is good and best of all it is healthy. So this one sounds to be a good garden rose.
