Henry Kelsey. Medium red. 25-28 [petals]. Variable üheight]. Repeat.
An Explorer rose. A kordesii hybrid. Very vigorous, trailing. Large clusters of 3-inch (7.5-cm) bright crimson flowers with golden stamens. Fairly good repeat bloom. Nice, spicy to fruity fragrance. Glossy, deep green foliage on thorny stems. Not grown for hips. Quite resistant to powdery mildew, although susceptible to black spot. Very hardy, but demands good winter protection if used to replace a true Climber. Lay cane down on ground, cover with soil, and then a thick layer of whole leaves (zone 4).

A R. kordesii hybrid and has the characteristic glossy leaves and long shoots of this group. Flowers are semi-double, deep red with showy yellow stamens. It blooms prolifically. It is relatively healthy, but the lower leaves can get blackspot. It has hardiness problems in the coldest areas. It is best tied up, as its sparse shoots will otherwise form an open prostrate shrub.

Page 72: [Photo] Parentage: Rosa kordesii x hardy seedling of complex origin. Description... an admirable climber... Vigor alone makes 'Henry Kelsey' a standout, but the deep red petals, contrasting with the golden yellow stamens, create an irresistible lure... highly resistant to powdery mildew, [but] not immune to blackspot... [it] can be left on the trellis in Zones 4 and 5 without serious winter injury...
