La majesteuse Before 1790... one of 15 Dutch gallicas that definitely or probably originated in the Low Countries and which are still in cultivation today

La Majestueuse Netherlands, before 1790. Sources: Cels, catal. 1836, p. 15; Desportes (1828), no. 1287; François, catal. 1790, p. 28; Guerrapain (1811), p. 95; Hardy, catal. of Luxembourg (approx. 1852-1860); Prévost, catal. 1829, no. 337; Vibert, catal. 1829, no. 616, and following catalogues. Nurseries: no. Collections: Gap Charance, L'Hay*, Malmaison
* Contrary to what Gravereaux believed ("Les roses de l'impératrice Joséphine", no. 146) the variety named 'La Majestueuse' in Rouen in 1829 (Prévost, catal. 1829, no. 337) does probably not correspond to the variety in question here. [see 'Perle de l'Orient' for Prévost's 'Majesteuse']
It is Desportes, in his Rosetum gallicum who indicates that this variety came from Holland. One already finds it in the catalogue of François of 1790, then in the Almanach of Guerrapain in 1811, who describes it so: "Les bois, feuilles, calices et Boutons n'ont rien de remarquable. La fleur, de trois pouces de diamètre, est bien faite, d'une belle couleur cramoisie, les pétales en sont larges, étoffés et veloutés. Elle est d'une odeur douce et s'épanouit aussie vers le 10 juin". [The wood, foliage, sepals and buds are not remarkable. The bloom, three inches in diameter, is of fine form, pretty crimson colour, the petals are large, expanded and velvety. It has a sweet fragrance and expands also towards June 10.]
But the specimen which is actually found in L'Haÿ (also in the collections of Gap-Charance and Malmaison, whose copies came from L'Haÿ) does not correspond at all to this description. Indeed, it produces a bloom with pink centre, pale pink on the edges, not at all "crimson". It is thus to be feared that this variety is extinct.
'La Majestueuse' should not be mixed up with two other 'Majestueuse', one a hybrid China, the other a hybrid perpetual (syn.; 'Prince de la Moskova'), listed by Simon and Cochet (nos. 7370 and 7371).
