Origin:

Bred by Thierry (France, before 1840).
Introduced in Australia by John J. Rule, Victoria Nursery in 1857 as 'Chenedollé'.

Class:

Gallica / Provins, Hybrid Bourbon, Hybrid China.

Bloom:

Red. Crimson; bright carmine; light vermilion. Strong fragrance. Large, very double, cupped-to-flat bloom form. Once-blooming spring or summer.

Habit:

Armed with thorns / prickles, upright.

Growing:

USDA zone 7b and warmer. Can be used for pillar.

'Chénédolé' in gardens and commerce is probably mislabeled, as the references do not mention any stripes or strong veining, and the colour was a crimson more into vermilion and cochenille-red. Despite its alleged French origin, this rose seems to have been distributed mainly in England and USA. Continental sources are pretty much silent on it.
