‘Amy Johnson’ – 1931. Souvenir de Gustav Prat cross. Named after the English aviatrix. Large Flowered Climbing rose. Double, recurrent, scented flowers, mid pink with yellow petal base and attractive stamens. Wrinkled foliage. Stout prickles. Flower: 28 petals, 85 mm. 1 to 5. Climber: 3.5m x 2m.

‘Amy Johnson’ Modern, large-flowered Climber. Medium pink. Repeat-flowerng. This is a very vigorous climber that produces an abundance of very fragrant, rosy pink blooms on long stems; they are scarce in summer, although a good flush is produced in the cool of autumn. They open out from plump buds into large full-petalled, double, cupped flowers. The leaves are wrinkled. Alister Clark was an innovative breeder who used Rosa gigantea lines in the hope that he could harness the vigor, health, fragrance and repeat-flowering tendency of that species into garden roses. Presumably some form of R. gigantea was the ‘missing’ parent since ‘Souvenir de Gustav Prat’ was an early Large-flowered Rose of only moderate growth. Amy Johnson was a pioneer aviator who, in 1930, achieved the feat of flying solo to Australia. It makes a good pillar rose, or can be grown over an arch or fence. Zones 5-11. Mrs. Lilia Weatherly, Tasmania. I grow many Alister Clark roses and I think for floriferousness they have to feature strongly in my list. Amy Johnson, L Cl. medium pink. 1931 Alister Clark, is a lovely rose, full of soft pink petals, with a stunning scent. It is almost always in flower. Its soft green leaves set off the flowers which are carried in clusters along the branches. Mine is fairly young and I have not supported it so that its branches hang down with the weight of the flowers. After dead heading it sets off again and has flowered all through the winter with a very summery looking display.
