Rosa gallica 'Versicolor': forerunner of striped Gallicas... mentioned for the first time in the West, by Charles de Lécluse (Clusius in Latin) in the 1500s... In England, it is known as 'Rosa Mundi' for Rosamund Clifford, the beautiful mistress of Henry II. She died in 1176 and engraved on her tomb are the words: Hic jacet in tumolo rosa mundi, non rosa munda. [Here, in this tomb, lies a rose of the world, not a pure (or honorable) rose.]... Over the centuries, this marvelous rose has inspired artists, including Redouté who painted it at Malmaison where it wa sknown as 'Rose de France à fleurs panachées'...

Rosa gallica versicolor ('Rosa Mundi', 'Striped Rose of France') Description... petals delicate pink striped with more or less bright red... The variegations which distinguish this cultivar often disappear, and it is not rare to see in one year variegated blooms followed by those of one colour only [reverting to the blossoms of the rose it sported from]... It is known in France as 'Provins Panaché' or 'Provins Oeillet' and in England as 'Rosamunde' after the beautiful and intelligent mistress of Henry II. 'Rosamunde' derives from the German Rosen, a rose, and mund, a mouth, or 'Mouth-of-rose'. Rosa gallica versicolor flowers better in shade than in full sun. It does very well grafted, but own-root shrubs give larger and more brilliant blooms.

Versicolor (R. gallica versicolor, 'Rosa Mundi') Gallica shrub... Since the seventeenth century, perhaps earlier, this has been a firm favourite, because of curious random striping on the petals... There is no ground for believing the legend that it wa slinked to Henry II's mistreaa, Fair Rosamund, who died in 1176. Its present popularity in Britain is shown by the fact that it headed the table of Best Old Garden Roses in the Rose Analysis for 1995.
