This thing is too gorgeous to not be available in Australia. It's annoying to think that it's available only a few hours away.

Since the Kiwis love referring to Australia as "the West Island", I wonder if Tasman Bay could be convinced to ship here on the basis that some Kiwis think it's part of NZ.

I have a special attraction to single roses and this is one of the best. If you like Lyda Rose you will love The Alexandra Rose. The plant is much more compact, with deep blue-green foliage creating a mounded bush usually about 3' high and 4' wide here in So Cal. The flowers are very large (3" to 4") and have a wonderful blend of golden yellow, copper and rose pink. There seems to be mixed data about it being once or repeat blooming. I am here to say it is DEFINITELY a repeater--it blooms all season. Very vigorous on it's own roots. It doesn't seem to be patented so you can propagate this Austin. Totally a winner.

Is this rose disease resistant?

Carolyn -- yes, this rose is very disease resistant. But grow it in full sun or as much sun as possible. Dan

I grew this rose for six years in New Jersey, z6b. To the east there was a wooden fence and to the west was a two story house. I think it got no more than six hours of sunlight per day. It grew very steadlly to about 5 ft across and 42" high. Of the roses I grew, this one made the prettiest shrub. It was even better than Konigin von Danemark and Felicia - both of which were excellent. In bloom it was less foliferous than, say, Ballerina; but I was much more fond of the effect of this rose in the garden.

There was never a spot of disease. And it tolerated dry soil better than most roses I grew. Of all the roses I have ever grown I can think of none that was of easier care.

In my garden it did not repeat. Not in six years. But I remember it with more fondness than Ballerina or a number of other much-loved roses. Those who cannot think of roses without thinking of big, shapely, fragrant blooms may find this rose less satisfying because it does not conform to a particular ideal. Those who are looking for a beautiful and durable flowering garden shrub and those who seek the novel in roses should grab this rose without hesitation and find a place for it in the garden.
