....in May 1962 we began our career as hybridists...It was in 1964 that we saw the results in the open air, and began to select our first introductions. The best was 'Escapade', a semi-double Floribunda from 'Pink Parfait' X 'Baby Faurax', with wide lilac pink blooms, white to the centre. The most popular, because more conventional, were helped by a fortunate thought in naming them in association with one another. 'King Arthur', 'Guinevere', 'Sir Lancelot' and 'Merlin'. We introduced them in 1967, five years from the time of pollination...

 'Escapade'   Medium   +  Rosy violet   Remontant   P5    H1   ***
This is one  of my  own  roses, bred from 'Pink Parfait' x  'Baby Faurax',  and introduced in  1967. It has much of the Polyantha about it, derived from its little amethyst pollen parent; but it denies the normally dominant Polyantha influence, by bearing large flowers instead of small. They have about twelve petals, and open to show  a white  centre, with rosy violet around it. To see these wide open flowers basking in the sunshine is a pleasant experience.    'Escapade' is an unusual kind of rose, so much so that it evoked a comment in a Belgian rose magazine: 'Nous admirons  l' esprit sportif de J. L. Harkness.'   I didn't know whether it was a compliment to 'Escapade' or not. Strange to say, a year later Alec Cocker  showed me a seedling of his, from 'Ma Perkins' x 'Baby Faurax'. It was 'Escapade's' twin.    'Escapade' can grow into a fairly big bush, and is a joy for cutting. If you cut it before the flowers are expanded, and let it open in water, the colour will develop perfectly, and will ensure your agreement that there is nothing else like 'Escapade' in the world of roses.

Others of very recent distribution are worth watching for with eager anticipation. These include.... and three excellent Floribundas that I saw in 1968 .....and Escapade (an unusually tall-growing semi-single, mauve - most decorative).
