Bred by Robert Brown (Scotland, before 1803).
Introduced in Scotland by Dickson and Brown / Dickson and Turnbull in 1803 as 'Large Double Two-Coloured'.

Hybrid Spinosissima.  

Dark red, purple shading, light pink reverse.  Medium, semi-double (9-16 petals) bloom form.  Once-blooming spring or summer.  

Armed with thorns / prickles.  Small foliage.  

Hardy.  Needs little care; relatively disease-free and quite hardy.  Prune lightly or not at all.  

Two of the earliest Scotch Roses were called 'bicolor' or two-coloured; this record is for the larger semi-double or double rose. For the smaller single or semi-double rose, see 'Bicolor' (Syn. 'Small Double Two-coloured Scotch').
