Don Sheppard. Review of Newer Roses for 1990-91 Season
'Hurdy Gurdy' Breeder etc. unknown; white with red stripe; 7 reports on 16 bushes; 1-4 years; 70cm;
7.0 rating. Another mini ex-Auckland area, which arrived here sans certificate in the 80s. It has a striped bloom, is eyecatching, quite a novelty in fact, opening fairly fast. Repeat is good. It grows in an ungainly fashion, flinging up longish canes, with clusters of gaudy blooms atop which do not last very long. The bush is healthy. None of the growers are greatly attracted to this really, I must report in all honesty, and yet it is rated at seven.

Don Sheppard. Review of Newer Roses for 1989-90 Season
'Hurdy Gurdy'. Bells Nurseries; white with red stripe; 9 reports; 13 bushes; 1-3 years; 60cm; 7.1 rating.
The few reports for the last three years are given here. Early reports feel it to be better than 'Stars 'n Stripes', with largish blooms coming in clusters, a slight fragrance, coming from a tall growing healthy bush. Latest reports endorse these early comments. The colour is good and petals well striped. The bush sends up long canes which spoil its habit.

p63 [photo] 'Hurdy Gurdy’ MGredy 1986. ‘Matangi’ x ‘Stars ‘n’ Stripes’. Striped deep red and white this miniature is sure to be popular. More petals than ‘Stars ‘n’ Stripes’ on a vigorous bush.

'Hurdy Gurdy' - Macpluto. The best of the new generation of striped roses. The vigorous plants are smothered with startling crimson and white blooms of perfect HT form. While the first growth is miniature, it settles down to about 35cms.
