Portland. Hybrides. Pompon des Quatre Saisons. - Quatre Saisons Pompon, Vibert. Petite arbuste vigoureux, mais délicat, et ne résistant pas à l'action d'un froid intense. Feuilles petites, très-rapprochées. Gemmes longs et saillants. Ovaire ob-conoïde, glabre; 3 des sépales sont foliacées, pinnatifides. Fleurs très-petites, presque pleines, rose clair, odorantes; à la seconde floraison, elles naissent dans l'aisselle des feuilles.

Le quatre-saison pompon, qui appartient bien à l'éspèce, en diffère néanmois sous le rapport de sa floraison, qui n'est pas interrompue pendant l'été, circonstance qui s'explique par son état de dégéneration. Cette singulière variété est très-delicate, est périt souvent pendant l'hiver. Quoique assez récente, son origine certain m'est inconnue; je la crois le résultat d'un accident dont l'art s'est emparé. ...Vibert

SPECIFIC CHARACTER. Roses with nearly round seed-buds; peduncles and footstalks hispid and prickly; leaflets oblong, pointed, with finely serrulated edges; blossoms of the one semi-double, and the other crowded with petals; prickles of the branches scattered: stem shrubby.

These Roses are considered as the finest and largest varieties of the dwarf species. The semi-double Rose was imported from France, we think, in the spring of 1823 to the Hammersmith Nursery under the appellation of Pompone Rose of Four Seasons, where it flowered during the summer and late in autumn; but whether the season was mild enough to allow the support of its title further, we do not recollect : the other Rose has abundance of bloom completely double, but flowers only during the summer months, and is commonly denominated Rose St. Francis, or large Rose de Meaux.
