A number of years ago, I received a letter from Marissa Fishman, of Greenmantle Nurseries (a GREAT rose source, by the way!), saying, "Barney Gardner wants to contact you...". I collected funny colored roses and Barney had loved them for decades. We communicated with each other and finally met. We shared roses back and forth, with him sending several of his seedlings, including Dream Dust, Tantarra, Fallen Snow, Irene and Barney. I'd asked him what else interesting he'd been sitting on all those years and he said the only thing he had left was this seedling. He said, "it's nothing special. It's just been hanging around like a loyal friend." The name struck me and the rose spoke it to me once I grew it. With his permission, I gave it the name, "Loyal Friend", and, with his permission, shared it and most of the others with Vintage Gardens and The San Jose Heritage Rose Garden.

I'd lost the rose some years ago, but The Heritage had been a good steward of it. It is from the shared plant all those years ago that my plant has finally come home to me. Thank you to the lovely people at The Heritage, Jeri Jennings and Jim Delahanty who made it possible for me to grow Barney's gift again. Kim Rupert
