Caroline Victoria Rose: A Rose for the Arts
FRIDAY, JANUARY 28, 2011 AT 2:29 PM
NEW! First time offered in B.C.

The has an impeccable genealogical background, combining the stately grace of the Audrey Hepburn rose with the fragrant, award-winning New Zealand rose. Classic and elegant, the Caroline Victoria is an exceptional hybrid tea rose with blooms of pure ivory shading to amber-blush in a spiral bud formation, and a lingering perfume evocative of citrus and raspberry with subtle overtones of mint. In fact, it is one of the most fragrant modern roses in existence!

Created in 2006 by world-renowned rose breeder Robert Harkness of Harkness Roses, Hertfordshire, England, the Caroline Victoria offers season-long repeat flowering and holds highest ratings for hardiness, disease resistance, and fragrance.

The Caroline Victoria Rose was commissioned as a perpetual commemoration of the life of artist Caroline Victoria Coldicutt, whose deep love for the arts inspired the founding of the Caroline Victoria Coldicutt Arts Foundation (CVCAF), a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting student artists in need. Thirty per cent of the profits from this rose will be dedicated to the Foundation, which brings hope, inspiration, and needed financial support to student artists at educational institutions in the US and Canada.

Has taken three years to really get going. A lot happier this year with all the rain we have had this spring. I have finally discovered that the blooms are highly scented and last a lot longer in a vase than my other whites (Annapurna, Cosmos), so it was worth waiting for!

Not a pure white, white with lemon centre. Fairly strong scent. Does well in wet conditions, blooms not spoilt. (Never did get a reply from Harkness ... see previous post.)

The colour on the Harkness' label of the one I have just planted is 'ivory white/lemon' .... We'll see next year when it flowers ... ;-)

Does your label show a date, Judith?

No, no date on the actual label, Cass. But the roses left Harkness UK on 7th November ... By the way, why do you ask? :-)

I ask, Judith, because the Harkness website doesn't put the date of introduction on the website. They don't register roses with the International Cultivar Registration Authority. I can't find their patents. They don't sell in the USA. The net result is that reliable information is a bit hard for us to find.

Sorry, Cass. My reply was quite stupid then!! In fact if you go to the Harkness website http://harknessonline.co.uk/index.html
and click on 'New for 2007', you'll then see they in fact go back three years. What has been put on your website for Caroline Victoria is perfectly correct; it is on the Harkness site as one of the 'new roses in 2006'.
Is that a less stupid reply?!?
By the way, while you're there, you might like to have a look at Harmatch, which I mentioned elsewhere. A new rose, with its official unveiling in 2008. Could perhaps be added to HMF? Thanks.

P.S., Cass, on the Harkness website, when you click on their 'links' (top right), there are three suppliers of Harkness roses in the USA, together with Canada, South Africa and New Zealand ...

P.P.S. There is a list of UK roses by date of introduction that might come in useful sometime maybe:

Thanks, Judith, for all your help. One Harmatch coming right up. I usually like to wait for a name and a breeder code name. Please let us know when the unveiling occurs, so we don't end up with duplicates.

In the USA, some sellers of Harkness roses don't display the breeder code on their websites, and they give the roses different marketing names from those used in Europe. We've gotten pretty good at spotting the Harkness type, but it is a challenge.

The breeder code name should stay as Harmatch. After the unveiling in May therefore, or perhaps before, it will be given its official name for sale in the UK. I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything about it.
Actually I also wrote an email to Harkness this afternoon - whether they'll be able to give me a reply or not I don't know. But I asked whether they had a list of all their roses with the date of production, or where I could find such a list. Or else which organisation in the UK was responsible for registering roses. (They must think I'm a right pain!!) At any rate, if I get anywhere, I'll keep you informed! Thanks.

Yes, the breeder code shouldn't change, assuming it is mentioned at all! Good job on the email to Harkness!
