I have considered the parents of this rose could possibly be Big Purple and Royal William, but I have no proof. Rather just traits.

Regardless, it remains to be my favorite fragrant red HT and 'Peak Performance' remains to be my favorite garden red HT.

I think 'Firefighter' is really good, too, but FF is a mammoth plant.

I wonder if CLARET/Frykristal and Magie Noire/FryCLARET (only available in France, as far as I can see) are the same rose. Same breeder, same description, same looks, and Magie Noire is not available in the UK at all (which seems odd for a rose bred in the UK). The only difference in description is that FryCLARET has strong perfume (all the French sellers say so), while CLARET is variously described as "highly scented" (Fryers/Bluediamond website), as having "good" fragrance (BBC website), "medium" fragrance (The Fragrant Rose Company), or as having "moderate fragrance" (HMF). But this difference is easily explained away. The comment posted here to the effect that the scent of CLARET is strong in the heat and moderate in cold weather explains the inconsistent descriptions re: CLARET's scent. On the other hand, in much of France (where, if I am right, the same rose is sold as FryCLARET) summers would be either Mediterannean or continental -- that is hotter than an average UK summer, thus drawing out the scent more consistently, and making retailers invariably describe FryCLARET as highly scented. None of this explains why two different codes (if that's what they are called) are used for the same rose (frykristal and fryclaret) but I am still convinced the two roses are one and the same (until Fryers steps up to tell me I am wrong!).

Have you actually asked Fryers? They quickly responded to a previous query I had once and it is always good to go to the horse’s mouth.
Once you get an answer, then HelpMeFind is always grateful to update our data.

I did too. Between the two of us, we are bound to get clarification.

The reply I got is a nonstarter -- I was told Magie Noire is Black Magic and bred by Tantau (Tankalgic), but that's obviously a different rose (like Barni's Magia Nera, which is yet a different rose).

Me too. I have now asked them specifically about FRYclaret.

Fryers have advised they do not have a rose with the code FRYclaret. I have deleted that code from ‘Magie Noire’. While it seems likely, at this stage we have no proof that ‘Magie Noire’ is a synonym of Claret’.

I really like this rose, but the peduncles are worse than Neptune's. Some are like 6" tree trunks!

Fragrance is very strong when it is warm, and moderate when it is cold. Bloom size is about the same size as Kardinal 85. Height is 5'. Health is okay for an HT. Loses a few bottom leaves. Nothing to complain about. Scent is fruity + damask. Not as oily as Fragrant Cloud. It's a pretty smooth scent.
