The taxonomy of this rose is unclear. Some authorities consider is a synonym of Rosa clinophylla. Crépin thought it might be a hybrid with R. moschata and R. clinophylla. It is somewhat distinct from R. clinophylla. See Reference and Comments and Questions for Viru and Girija Viraraghavan's observations about Rosa lyellii.
