Sean McCann. ....Following a lecture at Yorkshire Rosarians a while ago Rae Beckwith was offered a plant of 'Mrs. Harkness', an old garden rose, by Peter Harkness. The story is that the rose was found by Peter's grandfather as a sport of 'Heinrich Schultheis' over a century ago. Grandfather John named it for his mother who was born in Chester-le-Street in 1826. It was introduced by the firm, Harkness and Sons, Bedale, in 1893. Now there is a story of dedication and love of a rose. It still blooms in the Harkness family home in Hitchin....
