PINOCCHIO transmitted breadth of petal although it did not appear to have any distinction in this respect phenotypically. It tended to give to its offspring healthy foliage and flowers of regular formation and adequate petalage. It also eemed to give most of its offspring improved lasting quality as cut floers. When noticed this latter fact was stored away for use later when the variety was used to breed greenhouse cut-flower kinds. PINOCCHIO was the result of reported cross of [(ROBIN HOOD, Hybrid Musk X J. C. THORTON, red Hybrid Tea) X GOLDEN RAPTURE, yellow Hybrid Tea)]. ROBIN HOOD was hafl-shrub (showing its Hybrid Musk heritage) with red polyantha-like flowers with limited recurrence but extreme floriferousness for a short period. The two Hybrid Teas, of course, had recurring bloom in the conventional way for that clasifiction. PINOCCHIO was used a great deal by Gene Boerner of Jackson & Perkins Co. in breeding Floribunda varieties for both garden and greenhous cut-flower use. Many award winning Floribundas came from this operation.
