Big Chief Large Flowered (Dickson, 1978). Planted 1979. This is the finest specimen bloom cultivar for many years. Dark red with about 35 big petals of thick substance forming a huge, high-pointed flower. Superb in both spring and autumn as a show rose, but in my opinion too big for a cut-flower type. A tall, vertical grower with stems like ramrods. It retains its good colour for many days and never seems to blue.

In 1973 I saw a new red rose in Walter Gregory's display garden and asked him about it. It was not registered or even named then. He had bought sole rights to it from Pat Dickson. Later I asked Pat why he had sold such a fine rose - eventually it was named 'Royal Show'. Pat replied: "Yes, perhaps I was a bit silly", and inferred that he had kept a better cultivar. This proved to be 'Big Chief'!.....Pat Dickson has led the world in recent years in raising red roses.
