I am sorry to nag you about this but I don't think anyone has answered the query I raised a week ago (unless I have failed to find my way round the HMF site correctly). My question was: please could you let me know whether members can change the description of a rose on HMF? Adrien Mercier is not really white-striped - it's closer to the 'hand-painted' roses, with blotches of dark pink on a white base - and the undersides of the petals are also white.

It seems as though you are certainly finding your way around the site correctly these days.
The way to correct information is by a comment in the rose's page and we'll take it from there.

No, please do nag us, (especially when you apologise for having to do so.)
Unfortunately the database for colours does not really cope with blotches and hand-painted words.
But we’ve changed the description from “Red, white center, white streaks” to “Deep pink, white center, deep pink streaks, stripes, flecks, white reverse”. Is that more accurate?
Sorry for the delay.

Yes, that's better, thank you Patricia, but I wonder how the site is set up. Am I right in thinking that there are two fields that define colour i.e. a short one with such headings as crimson, orange and lilac, and a long one (with no limit to the length of the field) which accommodates a more detailed description? And am I correct in assuming that I cannot alter either of them directly? If so – and changes can only be made by an administrator – how do I apply to become one?

My aplogies for the tardy reply, but I have been hors de combat for several days.

My sympathies for the combat. Take it easy!
Have an exploratory play around with 'Advanced Search' (on the left under PLANTS). That will give you some idea of colours etc. Yes you are correct - there is another one - which does have a length limit. This is only available to a breeder adding his own roses, or to administrators. Administrators are made like bread. They have to prove themselves and 'privileges' (slavery I sometimes call it!) are given slowly.

A member (breeder) can change the description of their own roses, or the roses of someone they are acting on behalf of as agreed upon. Administrators, a limited few, can change any aspect of a rose listing, as well as most others.

The second part of your query is a little more involved; please bear with me.You have probably/hopefully noticed searching for roses with one or more specific characteristics is very fast, usually seconds. As with any large scale computer database, as is the case with HelpMeFind, this is achieved by defining sets of categories for various rose characteristics. Let use basic color as an example. To generate a list of every red rose, the system software could read the color description of each and every rose to see if the word red is included. This would be a rather slow process given the number of roses the HMF's database contains. If we instead keep list of red roses and another of whites roses, etc. (a gross oversimplification), the process of listing the red ones is much, much faster, and more efficient too. The problem is you can't (efficiently) have different lists for all the possible color variations; you need to make some "generalizations". HMF is much more fine grained then say the ARS color classifications but there are practical limits governed by desired system efficiency and the resources at play. Hence the lack of categories for every color variation.

Now the good news. Recognizing the overwhelming importance of accurate and descriptive color representations, HMF includes free form field for describing a rose's color and bloom characteristics in more descriptive/evocative detail. One has the option of categorizing a rose as simply "red and white" for search purposes but describing it in nuanced detail in the color/bloom description. We try to include that level of detail when it's available. Sadly, it's often not.

Bravo for reading this far! The short answer is... yes we can update description to include more detail.

If I read the comment of Mr. Quest Ritson well, he applies to become an administrator of this site.
I'm not responsible for HMF (only as a member and contributor)... but if I were, I would be honoured, by his kind gesture/proposal!

How do I make a correction to the description? The flower has red blotches and streaks on a white or pale pink background. the petal-backs are also white or palest pink.
