Origin:
Bred by Jean-Pierre Liabaud (France, 1871).
Class:
Hybrid Perpetual.  
Bloom:
Dark red.  Strong fragrance.  Medium to large, very full (41+ petals), old-fashioned bloom form.  Blooms in flushes throughout the season.  
Habit:
Armed with thorns / prickles.  
Height of 39" to 7' (100 to 215 cm).  Width of 3' (90 cm).
Growing:
USDA zone 6b through 9b (default).  Can be used for cut flower or garden.  Can be trained as a climber.  plant in partial shade for best color.  Disease susceptibility: susceptible to Mildew.  Protect tender new spring growth from hard freezes that may cause canker, die-back and death of the plant. .  Remove spent blooms to encourage re-bloom.  Spring Pruning: Remove old canes and dead or diseased wood and cut back canes that cross. In warmer climates, cut back the remaining canes by about one-third. In colder areas, you'll probably find you'll have to prune a little more than that.  Remove old canes and dead or diseased wood..

Named in memory of Charles Victor von Bonstetten, an early nineteenth century philosopher.
Declared synonym of 'Monsieur Boncenne' in 1886. - see References. In fact, it is a similar rose.
