Does palustris have to have a wet environment to grow or can it grow in a shrub rose type environment?

R.palustris is by far my favorite of all the species roses of North America. It has wonderful red nearly thornless wood, it prefers wet conditions, is a fast grower, produces many single petaled flowers, is very hardy, and has a wonderful late summer/early fall display of small bright red hips. This rose is perfect for those new to rose gardening as it needs very little care or in a nature garden as birds love to nest in this shrub and feast on the seeds.
