Page 277: Crimson Perpetual ('Rose du Roi') Souchet (Sevres) 1819... although Paul groups this rose under the Hybrid Perpetuals he says it differs materially from them... still it is a Hybrid Perpetual, probably between some variety of French Rose (R. Gallica) and Damask Perpetual (R. Damascena). It is said by some that this Rose originated in the gardens of the Palace of St Cloud in 1812.

When Mr. Lee of Hammersmith introduced 'Rose du Roi' to a delighted public, the Comte, who presided over the gardens in which the Rose was raised at St. Cloud, resigned his office in disgust because the flower was not named after himself, Lelieur, a most ungracious act, seeing that it was by the King's (Louis XVIII) desire that the Rose had its royal title, and that the honour of originating the variety was due (to uncommon case) to Suchet, the foreman, and not to Lelieur, the chef.

La Rose du Roi, obtenue dans les jardins de St. Cloud, près Paris, en 1812, a montré une divergence considérable des variétés pré-existantes et fut probablement un hybride entre le Rosier de Damas avec lequel il fut classé et le Rosier de Provins.
