Belle Biblis
Descemet, before 1815.
Synonym: Biblis (?).
Habit: less upright than typical gallicas; numerous small prickles; bristles. Foliage: abundant; light green; elliptical leaflets, sometimes only 3. Bloom: abundant bloom; solitary or in clusters of 2 to 4 blooms; medium size; flat; petals reflex when the flower fades; long sepals. Colour: purple lightly spotted.
In his Rosetum Gallicum of 1828, Desportes credits this variety to Descemet. However, in the catalogues of Vibert, Descemet's successor after 1815, 'Belle Biblis' is not listed although 'Biblis' is : it is probably the same rose.
Jules Gravereaux thought this variety dated from before 1815 because it was believed to have grown in Josephine's collection at Malmaison. It was reintroduced there a couple of years ago.

Descemet was another great rose grower of the Empire period. His nursery was at St-Denis near Paris. In 1815 his nurseries were destroyed during the war and at that time he had imported or bred more than a hundred Gallicas -- in fact 109 are know. Only 15 of these remain -- this is one of them.
