Don Sheppard. Final Analysis 1989-90
'Sue Lawley'. MACsplash; McGredy 1980; a complex hybrid involving 'Fruhlingsmorgen'; scarlet, edged white and frilly; 36 reports; 40 bushes; 1-5 years; Im; 6.7 rating. The easiest way to describe Sue is to say a smaller growing version of 'Matangi' and, in the opinion of most of our reporters, not quite as good in most respects. The blooms are handpainted with frilly edged petals, last well on the bush, but fade when picked. Floriferness is good, as is repeat. The big florets, which come in clusters, are often too heavy for their stems, which hang down. They stand rain well, health is good, although red spider finds the foliage tasty. The bush is not vigorous when compared with its cousins. A good garden rose, with attractive colour and it doesn't take up too much space.
