This one is disease free in my area and produces large hips.

I just planted a own-root Miracle on the Hudson rose bush here earlier in June 2016... No spray garden zone 6a Central Pa.
It just bloomed twice and it has a very nice red color...:)

Saw this rose blooming pretty a week before Memorial Day on sale at HomeDepot .. while Carefree Celebration and Tequila Supreme were still in buds. Lots of rain, but this rose stays healthy & pretty leaves. Came back to HomeDepot in 3 days, the many pots of this rose were sold out. Blooming early in zone 5a is impressive, and to have such healthy foliage in heavy rain is amazing. Knock-out is a bit gaudy, this rose has a nicer red in real-life.

Is the petal count very variable depending on temp?

Yes, more double in cooler conditions.
