[From "A Raise Eyebrow for Striped Roses", by Darrell g.h. Schramm, pp. 13-18]
Certainly the coloring of these roses seems delightfully capricious; thus, a certain rose was aptly named ‘Vick’s Caprice’. It was discovered growing in Mr. James Vick’s Rochester, New York, garden in 1889 and put on the market in 1891. Of a soft pink or lilac, striped and splashed with white and deep rose pink and sometimes darker pink flecks, but all very subtle, the high-centered flowers emerge prolifically from elegant buds, strongly scented on a three foot by two bush nearly without prickles. Not only is it a good seed producer, but also it is easy to grow from cuttings. Does this plant have a flaw? Perhaps a twofold one: it may ball in damp weather, and it can revert to the original Hybrid Perpetual ‘Archiduchesse Elizabeth d’Autriche’, a lovely and sumptuous rose in its own right. On the other hand, ‘Vick’s Caprice’ proves very hardy and reblooms well.

Vick's Caprice.   Hybrid perpetual.  Striped cream. Bloom size 5".  Repeat bloom reliable. Height 4'. Hardiness zone 5b-8.
For repeat bloom and a powerful fragrance, ‘Vick’s Caprice’ is the most dependable of the heritage striped roses. It’s a hybrid perpetual of modest height still makes a quality bedding rose, and it will be more at home with other roses than in a mixed border. A mutation of the French rose ‘Archiduchesse Elisabeth d’Autriche’ discovered in New York State, ‘Vick’s Caprice’ varies tremendously in color (pink to purplish stripes) and effect (clear or muddy background). But with three crops of blooms in a season, the chances of getting a memorable week of ‘Vick’s Caprice’ is stronger than from the more widely available striped hybrid perpetual ‘Ferdinand Pichard’.

Hybrid Perpetual Roses
Vicks Caprice (1891)
It is hard to describe the basic color of the bloom, but medium pink-rose with a lilac cast may suffice. The basic coat is then splashed and striped with white. A favorite with the garden set, this rose is very crisp, fresh looking, and fragrant.
