Gold Star of the South Pacific Love Bug (Somartlo) floribunda, bred by Rob Somerfield; Glenavon Roses. Trial No. 4979. This very strong, growing rose had all the hallmarks we have come to expect from Rob. The tight tall and bushy habit with glossy dark green foliage was free flowering; however it was not on my radar to get the top award. Yes the bushes had vigour and the flower was a good coloured red but the blooms open quickly. In my mind it is not a patch on one of its obvious parents (Lasting Love) in form or fragrance. As a floribunda, it often had a single flower to a stem which is not a good trait. Powdery mildew was noted late in the season and a little downy mildew in early spring. However it is guaranteed to grow and flower in any garden and in that respect it is a winner.
