Burbank devoted his life to plant breeding, developing over 800 plants including the Burbank potato which was introduced in Ireland to help combat the blight epidemic. He established a nursery and farm in Santa Rosa, California, which became world famous. In California his birthday is celebrated as Arbor Day and trees are planted in his memory. Burbank's home and home garden are open to the public in Santa Rosa, California, USA

At least four different parentages are reported: Hermosa x Bon Silene; Seedling of Hermosa x Bon Silene; Seedling of Hermosa x unknown; and Open pollinated Hermosa x a complex unrecorded hybrid of Bon Silene. See References and Comments for more information.

It is probably extinct, although Burbank's 'Santa Rosa' is frequently offered as 'Burbank.'
