Checking the photos of Ayrshire Splendens, or Rosa arvensis splendens, it seems that the rose sold in the Benelux countries is a more semi-double, flat-blooming variety, which is different than the more globular double rose sold elsewhere. Can you comment on this?

Well, I am "fighting" with the ayrshires for a long time. Since our arvensis Spendens has a lot of similarities with our venusta pendula, I thought we are having the right one. Mind, it is just a thought. I have tried several times, with varieties from Beales and Lens roses to get the "right" one, but they all have the same. That is why I thought we have the right Arvensis Splendens and the right Venusta Pendula. I think, if you look at the other pictures on HMF, the don't have much of a arvensis leave, do they? I like to hear your opinion! Regards, Hans van Hage

Unfortunately, mine is still too young and has not bloomed yet. The early description of Splendens by Paul notes double, globular blooms. Evidently the 'Ayrshire Queen' sold in Germany is not the original by Rivers, but the real 'Splendens'. The version you have in Benelux would then be a different Ayrshire.
