It's the topsoil that mostly counts. Here there seems to be a decent depth of topsoil over the chalk substratum. A good amount of rain helps the topsoil remain not overly alkaline and the plants need not try to grow deep roots into the chalk. In contrast to calcareous soils in med climate regions.
