Is there any way to combat the color shift? We've grown Ebb Tide in Ohio and Germany and always had beautiful purple blooms. Now that we are in Virginia, our Ebb Tide is magenta. We miss the proper color and wonder if there is any way to finesse that purple hue in our zone.

Not to my knowledge. It really is temperature dependent. You could try something like 'Stormy Weather' which may stay a touch more purple in the heat.

Thanks. What a bummer. Ebb Tide was our "gateway" rose...the one that started the rose addiction. We're rather attached to her, so we'll keep her, but I'm sad to think she won't be the rose we know and love in this zone.

This sounds so familiar here! My Ebbs started my love for roses also and they are so vigorous. But the often magenta color in our heat is making me less loyal as the color is difficult to mix with others.

I don't know if it will help but from my experience here in Sydney, Australia mine has always remained purple even when the temperatures have been 40c+/100f+ but it is in an area where it gets a shaded for a lot of the day, wouldn't get more than 6 hours direct.

Perhaps shade makes the difference, mine is planted in full sun.

It's the only thing I can think of given other peoples experiences. Mine remains purple the only difference is it makes smaller flowers in summer than in spring and autumn. I put in it's current spot simply because the flowers fried and became crispy in full sun (but even then I don't recall magenta but they were pretty much entirely burnt to the pot of looking like potpourri ), the UV radiation is fairly high here given the weak ozone compared with most places so that may also have something to do with it.

So it might be worth trying a semi shade spot to see if it helps at all.

Mine is on Dr Huey (I only know because Dr Huey sent up a shoot) if that helps in any way.
