8 April 2016. Livermore, CA. This is an area under an approximately 35-year-old (young!) valley oak (Quercus lobata) tree. Native cream bush (Holodiscus discolor) is the shrub leaning against the trunk and to the middle right. Plantings on lower left of hill are relatively new (Salvia x clevelandii, more Holodiscus discolor, mostly), to replace a very large shrub lost to the recent drought. Pink Watsonia borbonica is in the foreground, and the white rose on the hill behind the oak is Fortuniana. A young Mrs. Oakley Fisher is just beginning to bloom on the lower left, the non-yet-blooming rose on the right-front is Portland from Glendora (Joasine Hanet).
