Alfred Parson's portrait of Fortune's Double Yellow from Ellen Willmott's 'The Genus Rosa'.
Digital photo from copy of The Genus Rosa in the possession of The University of Western Australia Library.
Unfortunately the colours in Parsons' original watercolours were not accurately reproduced in 'The Genus Rosa'. Graham Stuart Thomas explained that "yellow pervaded to excess all tints of flower and leaf" and there is a truer reproduction of Parson's original painting in Thomas's 'A Garden of Roses'.
Colour aside, Parsons has captured the look of the rose - the bud, blooms, the twiggy, prickly stems and the general posture - with great faithfulness.
