The private rose garden of Bob & Kitty Belendez contains about 275 roses encompassing about 175 different varieties of roses. All types of roses are grown on this tiny 1/5th-acre tract home lot, including hybrid teas, floribundas, polyanthas, climbers, shrubs, miniatures, minifloras, and old garden roses. Most of the miniatures and minifloras are grown in containers in order to maximize space. Since the garden space is maxed out, about 5% of the collection is annually moving in and out to allow the Belendez' to enjoy new roses each year. To maximize bloom production, a large number of the roses (all types) are grown on Fortuniana rootstock. The soil in this garden is extremely sandy and alkaline. The roses here are watered and fertilized regularly, and chemicals are only sprayed on an as-needed basis.
