My garden in San Francisco is more like a cloister garden...small and tightly contained. It is also in desperate need of constant editing. I'm in USDA Zone 10a or (a better guide) Sunset Magazine Zone 17. I enjoy an eastern exposure and can see Oakland, California across the bay. My winter temps rarely gets down to a couple degrees above freezing, and summers are pleasant: high 60's, low 70's. I get wind and high fog in the afternoons, which keeps the temperature cool, so heat lovers languish and die in my garden.

I will never have a happy Gardenia here.

On the other hand, I have to-weep-for Fuchsias, Begonias, ferns, species Impatiens, Clematis... some wonderful things. There's even enough winter chill to allow early blooming peonies and low chill lilacs to thrive.

I have two dozen commercially purchased roses in my garden, plus about 100 or more seedling roses of my own (or the bees) creation. Every fall I gather hips from any source available, clean and chill the seeds, then see what comes up. There are some very nice surprises every year.

I aspire to owning a one to four acre property of my own one day...
