In days gone by I grew eighty to one hundred bushes in my garden, but for various reasons these have dwindled substantially over the years leaving me with just a few, including one each of The New Dawn (rambler), Compassion (shrub), Alexander (HT) and Rosemary Harkness (FL) and three of Chandos Beauty (HT).

In addition to the above, each year I buy few potted roses and retain them in their pots. That way I can rotate them around my patio so that the ones currently showing their best are placed where they are in my line of vision immediately outside my patio door. Potted roses only last two or three years, so I simply replace the oldest with new varieties each year. I usually have around fifteen or twenty potted varieties at any one time.

London's magnificent Queen Mary Rose Garden in Regents Park is less than an hour away so I visit frequently. For lovers of hybrid teas and floribundas it is simply sublime: around eighty single-variety beds each with 200-300 cultivars from the world's best hybridisers and growers, all immaculately and lovingly cared for in a majestic setting.

Living in St Albans I am also only 15 minutes away from the Royal National Rose Society's 'Gardens of the Rose,' which has been substantially revamped in recent years. Unfortunately the Society has fallen on very hard times so these days their gardens are much reduced in scale and excellence.
