My property was first developed almost 100 years ago as a summer cabin for a San Francisco doctor and his family. He later turned into a Boy Scout camp, complete with a horse or two and a wading pond. There are lots of trees here, including live oaks, redwoods, firs, big leaf maples and even a date palm and two old jubaeas.

The trees mean there is not quite as much sun for the roses as I'd like, but I wouldn't want to live without the old trees for a minute. They make it easy to create private spaces to enjoy the roses, and add valuable structure to the garden. I grow mostly older rose varieties. My favorite classes are the teas, gallicas and ramblers. I'm lucky enough to have a climate where I can grow almost any type of rose. I stopped counting after 100, but my guess is that I now grow about 130 different roses. I enjoy photographing them, and making bouquets to show them off!
