It is like gardening in Pasadise, with summers that don't really begin until July but taper off into early January (watch the Rose Bowl Parade to see our January First weather!). In all fairness, its crazy to say we have no seasons here, my roses get blasted every April and July when spring and summer's calendar onset is followed in two to three weeks by an abrupt change in the weather. Summer, though, just sort of slides into winter (similar lag, though, two or three weeks after the solstice) establishing our third season. Near where the Tujunga wash joins the Los Angeles River, I get free water at 12' (goes down a few more feet by December), so I don't have to water my established citrus, passionfruit, figs or grapes. I suspect my climbers, all young, and maybe even Tiffany rose (they get big and go deep on their own roots here) will attain the free stuff soon. The 'June Gloom' which begins in April is hell on roses as the powder mildew loves the cool damp nights when the marine layer blows in and the hot dry afternoons, but resolves with our hot but not too hot summer and its often single-digit humidity. My roses have their last summer (fall, we don't have any such season here! The botanical event 'falls' between mid-December and mid-January) blooms just as my pomegranates lose their leaves in mid January, and start growing again in mid to late March depending on their exposure.
