Longwood Gardens has a long history. A Quaker family purchased the land from William Penn in 1700, farmed the land and started planting an arboretum around the end of the 1700's. The Peirce family home remains within the gardens. In 1906, Pierre S. du Pont bought the arboretum to preserve the trees that were threatened to be sold for lumber. Du Pont developed the gardens and used the Peirce House as a weekend residence until his death in 1954.

Longwood Gardens is dedicated to preserving the spirit and beauty of the early 20th century gardens of Pierre S. du Pont, according to its mission statement. The well-designed web site is packed with information and excellent pictures of 325 acres of gardens.
